Mika, French and Watches – story by Anna

The Voice, French TV show.

Michael Holbrook Penniman, also known as Mika, was born the 18 August 1983. He is a Lebanese-British singer-songwriter. He has 5 siblings and 2 smaller sisters.

Mika and his family was forced to leave war-torn Lebanon and moved to Paris. He was one year old at this time.

He learned very early to play piano, at 4 years of age. In 1990, when Michael was 9, they moved to London where he went to the “Lycée Français de Charles de Gaule”.

From the beginning of his childhood, Mika trained with a Russian teacher who taught him Opera melodies. At that school he had a severe bullying, because of his high voice and singing abilities.  He was also dyslexic. When he got older Mika attempted the “Royal College Of Music” to improve his talent.

Mika has travelled a lot. Because of this, he can speak 4 languages almost fluently: he speaks French and Spanish fluently; in an interview on 28 September 2009 with The Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1 he commented that he had taken Mandarin Chinese for 9 years but did not speak it very well; he also mentioned that his three sisters all speak it fluently. He also speaks a little bit of Arabic with a Lebanese dialect, his mother’s native tongue.

Mika’s first album  ”Life in Cartoon” was the most bought album in France for years.  Sadly, I would say, but I’m not against it, Mika is gay, for several years he stated that he didn’t want any label and said he could fall in love no matter the gender of the person is.

Mika has had 3 albums on sale since 2007 “life in Cartoon” –“The Boy you knew” and “Origin of Love”.

This year Mika is one of The Voice’s judge between Garou, Jennifer, Florent Pagny. What I like about him is that he is still a child sometimes, but when he has to be serious and ‘’normal’’ he is more than NORMAL.
